Laney SalisburyPublished in 2009, this is a cautionary tale about fraud and greed. Artist John Myatt was down on his luck and living in a ramshackle British farmhouse. Enter John Drewe, a man who is not what he appears to be. Drewe has just passed off one of Myatt's copies as a genuine Cubist treasure at auction where it fetched the princely sum of $25,000. Desperate for cash, Myatt agrees to supply Drewe with more paintings to sell. In order to make this subterfuge work, Drewe had to expend considerable effort compiling fake exhibition catalogs, forged sales receipts and restoration records for paintings which never existed all in an attempt to create believable provenance. Though they were ultimately caught, one can't help but admire the level of deception these men were able to create.
LIBRARY HEADLINES
Destination Deco, an event originally scheduled for Saturday, July 24 at the Zanesville Museum of Art, has been postponed until next year.
